REEP: RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME

To coincide with National Poetry Day, REEP has successfully launched an exciting new awards scheme for schools, to design a poetry pamphlet. The brand new website, www.reepawards.org   explains more about the awards, the theme and how to enter.  An ideas section containing curriculum resources will be launched later this month.   Many have asked whether REEP is continuing its Schools Garden Awards.  When the Awards were first started, there was less interest in school gardens and very few awards.  Now, happily, school gardens have really become popular, so REEP has decided to move on and take an innovative step into another area. The Awards for 2009-10 will therefore be for poetry pamphlets, on the subject of 'Rivers'.  The main REEP website continues to operate at www.reep.org

EVERYONE MATTERS IN THE CLASSROOM. A PRACTICE CODE FOR TEACHERS OF RE

This code aims to complement the GTCE’s general code for teachers. When that code was being drawn up, there was some concern about the implications of ‘demonstrating respect for diversity and promoting equality’ and whether that principle might ever come into conflict with a teacher’s sense of integrity in relation to his or her own beliefs. This voluntary code for teachers of RE is designed to help reassure teachers of RE themselves as well as pupils, parents and colleagues that a professional approach to such issues can and will be observed. It has been drawn up by an REC group following consultation with teachers, advisers and faith and belief community members. The code can be downloaded from the REC website at www.religiouseducationcouncil.org

RESILIENCE

The DCSF is funding the REsilience project to make available professional development on teaching about controversial issues including violent extremism justified with reference to religion. This programme for secondary teachers of RE has been moving along according to plan and has now entered the development phase. One of the main tasks during this phase is to firm up the shape and content for the CPD programme, and clarify the resource requirements. The project is growing, in terms of personnel, and at the beginning of November four mentor consultants were appointed to assist with this work and to have a key role in the development and recruitment of the mentor role. A more detailed update can be found on the REC website www.religiouseducationcouncil.org

CELEBRATING  RE

Plans are rapidly moving ahead for a bi-national celebration of RE in England and Wales throughout the month of March 2011. A subcommittee of the REC, chaired by Denise Chaplin, is working on plans to involve pupils, staff, governors and parents in schools alongside SACREs, faith and belief communities, politicians and members of the public in a month to celebrate RE as a subject of inspiration, challenge, debate, engagement, community spirit, empathy and much more besides. All involved in RE are invited to plan events, make links with other organisations or groups, contribute to fundraising and publicise this opportunity to raise awareness of the value of religious education as a subject whose time has come. RE Celebration will have its own website in the New Year; until then there will be information and updates on the REC website at www.religiouseducationcouncil.org
